Richmond Marathon Playlist!

I am so excited for all the runners coming to Richmond over the weekend for the 8k, half, and full Suntrust Marathon!  It is such a great event for our city and even though I have run the half and the full the last two years, sadly I am sitting this one out.

I might be headed to Charlottesville to run the Casey Cares 5k, in honor of one of my classmate’s friends who tragically passed during Semester at Sea, but whether I am here in RVA or in Cville good luck to all the runners!!

One of the things I always stressed about was finding the right music.  Even though I always trained with friends, people don’t really chit-chat during the races as much- having a good playlist is HUGE.  Now, I am going to preface this Spotify assortment I am sharing by saying A LOT of it is REALLY bad.  I am not proud of it, but I’m talking Ke$ha, Skrillex, some Britney Spears Smurf song… but I dunno about you, but when I need to run the shittier and more upbeat the pop the better.  When you are in a race you need the UNCE UNCE UNCE.  Here is a link to some music to pump you up and keep you movin. (I recommend hitting shuffle)

The Richmond Marathon has such a special place in my heart as it was my first marathon, I qualified for Boston, and really where I fell in love with long-distance running.  I am happy to report that two of my favorite people will be apart of the race for the first time! My sister Jessica is running the 8k, her second longest race ever! She has come such a long way with her running and is a wonderful thing for us to share.  Also, one of my very best friends in the whole world Meghan is running her FIRST Half!! I am so proud of them both and know she will do great- if you see someone who looks like me or this hot blonde- CHEER THEM ON!

Boho Cycle Studio

I am still buzzing after a absolutely fantastic event yesterday, at the newly opened Boho Cycle Studio!

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 9.17.49 AM

I used to hate cycling, but after a few experiences in LA this summer, I found that with great music, energetic instructors, and mixing up the moves spinning can be awesome!

The lovely Mallory led our class yesterday, and (after I tapped in 5 minutes late) she kept everyone smiling and sweating the whole time.  Not only did we utilize different speeds, intensity levels, and positions on the bike, but we also had light dumbbells for an arm work out too. Total body exhaustion up in here.

The room was very relaxing and cool which helped me focus on my work out and Mallory’s playlist was very fun and upbeat.  I still have this song stuck in my head…

Copping it for the headphones to get my pulse movin’ on a run after this post. Shannon and I have been buddies for a while and I am just so happy for her! I know Boho Cycle Studio is going to be a huge success.

It sounds sad, but their opening was probably the best thing that has happened to me in weeks hahah.  It was just refreshing to be in an energetic, positive, colorful, and athletic environment again.  Since I am not doing the Marathon Training Team, it really felt like something that was missing had been replaced.  I spent the last two-three years training with Katherine training, and am having INTENSE fomo since I am not running the Richmond Marathon this year, so it was great to exercise in a group setting again.

I met some awesome ladies from Sportsbackers, and was recognized from my blog for the first time ever! It was probably the coolest thing that has happened to me!

Goatacado catered the opening, which was deeeelightful, since it is my absolute favorite food truck in Richmond.  If I could eat Goatacado everyday, I would.

Look at this cute lil mechanism:

I know I will be signing and up and making it apart of my regular work out schedule, especially since I found out there is a lower student fee- no excuses!  If anyone wants to try it out with me let me know, and check it out yourself!

Free hair things and floss… this kind of thing entices me.

Macy’s CheeseSticks #Giveaway

Lately I have been living off whatever is in front of me. I have barely had time to breathe with crazy back-to-back projects, and sit-down meals are not really the name of the game anymore.  Snacks is where it’s at.

Usually my snacks are less than gourmet, so you can imagine how happy I was when this giant box of delicious, all-natural, cheese sticks arrived at my door! Check out the oodles of flavors they generously let me try:

Omnomnomnom. I know, attack of the tastebuds.  Cheesy, savory, spicy, crunchy, sweet… I ripped open every box nibbling one of each immediately. I have been on an all cheese stick diet for two weeks and grazing  through each flavor.  I had a little taste test party and I was amazed about how many secret cheese stick lovers there are, they all approved! I just put them in  a little Mason jar and they disappeared very quickly.

I mean, what can you not put in a Mason jar these days… ever Pinterest “Mason Jar Ideas“? You get about ten trillion responses, people are real inventive-like.  ANYWAY, back to these sticks of heaven.  They are great for snacking, dipping, and entertaining.

DSCF1858My favorite flavors were the Smoked Jalapeño and Java Cinnamon.  The latter obviously is not a CheeseStick…it is a “SweetStick.” Basically it tastes like an Auntie Anne’s pretzel that has shape shifted into a cracker. Trust me it is killer.

Just leave a comment if you would like to try! Like them- extra entry for liking them on Facebook!

I will randomly select a winner next Wednesday!

Heres a lil about Macy’s CheeseSticks:

Runner’s World Cookbook Recipe!

I have a delicious and healthy recipe to share with you all today from the new Runner’s World Cookbook!  The lovely people over at Runner’s World sent me this book and I am happy to report it is glorious!

They have great sections about what to eat before long runs, speed work, recovery runs, and recipes for every diet.  I especially like the lists of the best carbs, how to eat more good fat, and a the list of vegetables that have important vitamins essential for runners.  All of the recipes that are easy to follow and adaptable.

I have made Savory Steel Cut Oats, Multigrain Pancakes, and the Good-for-you Black Forest Blizzard, but I cannot wait to try the Thai Avocado Soup, Mediterranean Pork and Asparagus Stir Fry, & Sticky Toffee Figgy Cupcakes. Everything in this book is fresh, wholesome, and most importantly makes you feel great before and after you run!

I wanted to feature a recipe for fall, and this butternut squash and kale salad is a great transitional meal for when you want something nutritious, but the idea of cold salad on a rainy day makes you want to shave your head.  The goat cheese, roasted squash, crunchy nuts, and spicy dressing make this taste more like comfort food than anything else.

Warm Butternut Squash and Kale Salad

DSCF18411 small (about 1 pound) butternut squash peeled and cut into 1/2 inch chunks
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)
ground pepper
1/4 cup chopper walnuts
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 clove garlic minced
2 large bunches kale
1/2 red onion chopped
2 tablespoon crumbled goat cheese

Preheat oven to 450 F. Toss the squash in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of the oil. Spread on a foil lined baking sheet. Lightly season to taste with salt and pepper. Baker for 15 to 20 minutes, or untile tender and starting to brown.

Meanwhile, spread the walnuts on a small baking sheet and put it in the same oven. Toast for 2 minutes and remove from the oven.

In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, mustard, cayenne, 1/2 teaspoon salt, a generous amount of black pepper. While whisking, drizzle in the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Stir in the garlic.

Remove the stems from the kale and chop or tear the leaves into 1″or 2″. Rinse the Kale in a colander

Into a large skillet over medium-high heat, gradually add the wet kale and cook, stirringconstantly, for 5 minutes, or until the kale is bright green and slightly wilted. Remove from the heat. Transfer to a large bowl and toss with the dressing, onion, waluts, and a pinch of salt. Pile the dressed greens in the center of 2 plates. Top woth the cooked squash and goat cheese.

I can’t thank Runner’s World enough for sending me this, and really for all they do!  Whenever I think about Runner’s World I always think about how great they were to me and Katherine at Boston. I saw this adorable post today that made me super happy.

“A young couple still battling to recover from serious injuries they suffered in the Boston Marathon bombings is taking their relationship to another level: they’re getting married.

Pete DiMartino, 28, asked Rebekah Gregory, 26, on Friday if she would tie the knot with him, about one year after the couple started dating. He got down on one knee, alongside her wheelchair, and proposed with a ring he had custom-made in the months after the April 15 attack that killed three people and wounded 275 others.

“I said, ‘You’re my best friend and I love you.’ I couldn’t get anything else out, I was shaking,” DiMartino, of Rochester, N.Y., said from Gregory’s hometown of Richmond, Tex.”

A Lot of Cute Stuff on FB

People shared an abnormal amount of cute stuff on Facebook this AM.  In light of the fact that it is Thursday, ignoring the fact that our government has shut down, and just to share the wealth…. behold:

This otter sleeping on this girl’s face.

That same otter being awake and somehow being even cuter…which is seemingly impossible. I will never be happy.

This red panda freaking out about a pumpkin.

The comments I find even funnier about said freak out:
